Summer Art and Fun

The weather might not suggest so, but summer – my calendar says – is just around the corner! YAY!

But what to do in Bruce County when the sun won’t heat up our lake and the beaches are filled with cool sand only? Well, I guess we are all going right back to school. – Well, ART SCHOOL, of course!

I have planned exciting, fun-filled classes for ages 6-8, 9-12 and 11-14 at the Southampton Art Centre. Want to hear about it?

Let’s start with the big kids or shall I say almost young adults? We’ll sure do some mature art here! Ever heard of modern art? Sure. But have you ever wondered why it’s called modern art, when the artists who were responsible for that name are long dead? Find out in my class! You will hear about artists like Hundertwasser, Dali,  Matisse, Picasso, Oppenheim, Oldenburg, Saint Phalle, and more. Each day we’ll look at some of their art work, get inspired to do our own and meet in Gertrude Stein’s salon to discuss our art. In between we’ll need to do some research e.g. at the ice cream parlour, find artistic objects on the ground, look at words and and sentences, and learn to explore and improvise in art. The mornings are dedicated to 2D artwork like painting or collaging, the afternoon for 3D projects, like sculpting, building an installation, etc. You bet that we’ll have an art show on the last day of the week!

Next comes a class for the 9-12 year-old artist, the eager one who knows how it’s done! My wildly popular class “animalia” is back! Ever wondered how to paint a platypus? or a hippopotamus? or a zebra? Learn to paint your favourite animal while experimenting with all kinds of drawing and painting material, like different pencils, charcoal, ink, pastel, watercolour, … etc. Of course we can also mix and match our animals to make up species of our own. They have to be good though! Like that:

Dress for a mess! Be creative! Make friends! Have fun!!!

Register Here for July 8-12

Register Here for August 6-9

And last but not least, we’ll dive deep into the water – and the watercolour! – with the brave 6-8 year-old artists!  Oh, you will have fun listening to picture book stories all around the sea, the beach, and the marine life. Then you’ll experiment with watercolour techniques involving precision, splattering, dropping paint on wet paper, and learning to draw with watercolour pencils all kind of water creatures from the crab to the octopus to the mermaid, to killer whales and pirates. And if this wasn’t enough fun, let’s make up our own beach stories you’ll illustrate and share on the last day with our invited audience.

Find out more and register quickly at the Southampton Arts Centre, High Street, Southampton.
