Diving Deep into Watercolour
Date & Time: July 8-12th, 9 am – 12pm

Only the brave dive deep into the water, but what a colourful world might they see! Children will splash with watercolours, looking for coral reefs and special artsy effects. Air bubbles might come to the surface as schools of fish swim by. Are there places to hide behind seaweeds and shipwrecks? Are there games to play with mermaids and seahorses and whales? – A week of painting, stories and play awaits. What art you waiting for?

Animalia with Antje Martens-Oberwelland

It’s a jungle out there, so get ready to explore! With a diverse selection of reference sculptures and images, students will learn to draw and paint animals of their choice in a variety of materials. Students will begin with the basic skills of drawing with pencil, ink, and charcoal, while learning about the anatomy and characteristics of different animals. As the week progresses they will move into painting with watercolour, soft pastels, and oil pastels bringing their creations to life with colour!

Modern Art

Modern Art with Antje Martens-Oberwelland    NEW!

Explore the world of Modern Art! In this course, students will learn about artists such as Hundertwasser, Oppenheim, and Dali. Through the discussion and observation of these artists, students will use them as inspiration in creating their own works of art. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with two-dimensional materials such as drawing, printmaking, and painting, as well as three-dimensional materials such as papier-mâché and plaster rolls. This class will not only provide students with art history education, but also a focus on learning through experimenting. Please note that parental permission will be required to attend an offsite afternoon to sketch and visit the ice cream parlor!



Coffee Time! with Antje Martens-Oberwelland

Date & Time: May 16th, 9am-4pm

Material Fee: $8 payable to the instructor

This course transforms coffee from a delicious beverage, into a painting medium! Using coffee as a medium is a fun and unusual alternative to traditional paints, as it is “erasable”. Students are encouraged to loosen up, and will learn techniques relevant to all water based mediums such as washes, wet-in-wet, and splattering. Antje will give demonstrations, and then students will compose a few small coffee paintings of their own. Reference photos or objects will be provided, along with cookies and lots of fun! Please note that the material fee does not include the latte, mocha, or espresso you might want to sip while you work!

In a fun and relaxed atmosphere we will explore everything ink with techniques like outlining, layering, spraying, and splattering! We will look at the versatility of ink, and explore different brands, and tools to achieve different effects. Students will learn hand lettering, how to draw and paint with inks, and other tricks of the trade like when to use ink as alternative to watercolour, or when to use permanent versus soluble ink. Antje will demonstrate techniques and provide reference photos, but students are encouraged to create their own original art piece! This course is great for beginners, but also for watercolorists and acrylic painters looking to stretch their skills.

Antje Martens-Oberwelland - Paper Art

Paper Art – Cuts and Collage with Antje Martens-Oberwelland

Date & Time: September 18-20th, 9am-4pm

Material Fee: $35 payable to the instructor

Many people may not know, but Henri Matisse was known for his paper art and collage. We will examine his work, along with Antje’s, and other contemporary paper collage artists to learn about design, what makes a good pattern, and how to use paper and scissors creatively. Participants will start out with paper cuts and create patterns using a variety of papers which will be glued onto a paper substrate. If desired, finished work can be enhanced using ink or items found in nature. Participants will create a landscape or still life using ripped paper either from magazines or richly textured and tinted handmade paper. Additional to the fee of $35, participants will need to bring a pair of scissors and an extractor knife.
