I'm a formally-trained German/Canadian artist, based on a farm in Bruce County, Ontario. Surrounded by nature and animals, I primarily paint what I see: animals and landscapes. I mostly work in traditional oil or ink, focusing on bringing out the soul, a deeper understanding or the unique characteristics of my chosen subjects.
When I first moved to Canada, I was soon known and commissioned for my pastoral landscapes and whimsical animal portraits in traditional oil. More recently, and inspired by conserving nature and studying plants, I have gone on to experiment with mixed media, ink, charcoal, plants, recycled materials and handmade paper. Not to say that I no longer enjoy painting with traditional oils, but to me being creative means to constantly stretch into unknown territory. I see myself as a life-long learner, observing the world around me while trying to make sense of it through art. My curiosity in my subject matter and my desire to capture a moment in time, guide me when I apply my knowledge of traditional art techniques with improved methods and sometimes unorthodox practices. To me the practice of making art is just as important as the finished product, which I hope you will enjoy as much as I enjoyed the process of creating it.
I began studying fine art at the local art academy while still in high school, then officially at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg, Germany. Being told early that my exploratory art was way ahead of my age, I have worked with many artists, including sculptors and stage designers. I exhibited in group and solo shows in Germany and Canada as well as in many national and international juried shows, where many of my paintings have been sold and some have been recognized with awards. Many of my artworks have been commissioned and are found in private collections throughout Canada and USA, Germany, Italy and Spain, as well as on book covers. I’m a member of SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) and FCA (Federation of Canadian Artists), the FCA Toronto Chapter, the Southampton Arts Centre, the Bayfield Artist Guild (BAG) and the Goderich Co-op Gallery. I have juried art shows, see myself as an advocate for the arts, and with more than two decades of experience in art education - I’ve been a popular instructor in art organizations such as the Southampton Art School.
My paintings are for sale - on my website, at shows, and currently at the Goderich Coop Gallery. I'm available for painting and illustration commissions and I always welcome your inquiries.
